Jimmy worked as a Clerk to the Court, presumably in Skipton, until 1950 when he retired for medical reasons, apparently related to stress. Both Ken and his wife Margaret remembered him being short-tempered. At that point, he and Elsie moved to the Fylde coast in Lancashire, where by May 1950 they were living at "Strathnaver", 44, Kingsway, Ansdell in Lytham St Annes. He died in March 1957, whilst still living there, having succumbed to lung cancer which had most probably been caused by his heavy smoking. He was cremated at Carleton in Blackpool, although his headstone is located in Greenacres cemetery in Oldham. The stone bears not only his name, but also that of his father and mother, Joseph and Ann, and his wife Elsie
Jimmy was a Baptist by religious persuasion, and may have met Elsie through the church.
