Again, we do not yet know when they returned, but by April 1901, when he was 47 years old, Joseph and his family had returned to England and were living at 5 Hale Lane in Failsworth. Hale Lane was only a few hundred yards from where his father and sister lived at the time in Robert Street. It is the road upon which Failsworth Station is situated. He is recorded as working in a shorthand typist printing machine works, an apparent change of career from his earlier employment.

In 1905 Joseph appears again as informant on his father's death certificate (Ben died on 26 August in that year), and by this time Joseph, then aged 51, and his family had moved again. The address on the certificate was given as 26, Tudor Road, Oldham, just a few doors away from where he had lived as a young man with his parents over twenty years before. He continued to live at the same address until 1909 or 1910, at which time he moved to 29, St Thomas Street South, Oldham, just a few blocks away, where he remained until his death in 1931. Joseph died on 8 January 1931 aged 76
